Healing

Understanding the Tradition

What Is
Iyengar Yoga?

Iyengar Yoga was introduced by BKS Iyengar — recognised as a legendary yoga master across nations. In this yoga style, he systematized more than 200 classical yoga asanas and 14 different kinds of pranayama into an accessible and precise practice. Iyengar yoga is popular for its rigorous attention to detail and perfect alignment using various props.

It focuses on holding a yoga pose for a longer duration — building flexibility, strength, stamina and awareness in your body. One of the main features of Iyengar yoga is using props such as straps, blocks, chairs, blankets and bolsters for different asanas. This allows you to learn the correct posture of any pose regardless of age, physical condition or flexibility.

Every Iyengar yoga class is slow-paced and focused primarily on a specific pose, grounded by a therapeutic goal. Perfection in alignment is non-negotiable — and every individual is encouraged to refine their capabilities under the guidance of a trained instructor.

The Legacy of B.K.S. Iyengar Ji

Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar was born in 1918 in India and considered one of the most legendary yoga icons of the 20th century. In his early years, he faced tuberculosis, typhoid and malaria — and came across yoga as his disciplinary path to healing. He not only transformed himself but turned his journey into a global mission. He is the author of the iconic "Light on Yoga" — published in 20+ languages and treated as the foundational textbook for students and teachers worldwide. Today, Iyengar yoga is practised in 80+ countries — its legacy carried forward at Adiyogam with precision, integrity and devotion.

Why Practice Iyengar Yoga

5 Transformative Benefits

Iyengar yoga provides a vast range of benefits — physically, mentally and emotionally. Considered one of the most therapeutic yoga styles in the world, it is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels.

01

Correct Posture & Body Alignment

Iyengar yoga trains you to become deeply aware of your body’s alignment in each pose — correcting bad posture, enhancing spinal health and bringing balance into your musculoskeletal system. Back pain, neck pain and joint pain caused by poor posture begin to diminish with consistent, prop-supported practice.

02

Increased Strength & Flexibility

Holding asanas for longer durations engages muscles more deeply — building strength alongside flexibility safely and gradually. Unlike high-intensity yoga styles, props assist in opening tight muscles and increasing range of motion without risk of injury, making progress accessible at every fitness level.

03

Enhanced Focus & Present-Moment Mindfulness

Iyengar yoga requires proper attention and mindful instruction to achieve correct alignment — cultivating deep present-moment awareness and high concentration in every session. Understanding these instructions transforms the physical practice into a moving meditation, calming the mind as effectively as the body.

04

Therapeutic & Healing Effects

Iyengar Yoga is deeply therapeutic for conditions such as hypertension, arthritis, scoliosis, anxiety, depression and chronic fatigue. The gentle, methodical approach combined with props allows safe and effective practice even for those with significant physical limitations — making healing accessible to everyone.

05

Stress Reduction & Emotional Balance

The mindfulness and meditative nature of Iyengar yoga calms the nervous system and reduces cortisol levels. Holding poses with proper awareness relieves stress, refreshes the soul and creates a lasting emotional equilibrium — one that extends naturally into every area of daily life long after the retreat ends.

The Five Pillars

Core Principles of Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar yoga is built on five interrelated foundations — each working together to deepen your practice and provide safety, transformation and accessibility for every practitioner.

01

Foundation

Alignment

Correct alignment is the central pillar of Iyengar Yoga — bringing your body into its optimal structural position in every asana. You will be guided to pay close attention to how each body part is engaged and positioned to ensure symmetry and overall balance. Unlike other yoga styles that prioritize flow, Iyengar demands that every movement be purposeful, precise and intelligent. This attention to skeletal alignment protects your joints, reduces injury risk and creates a deeply therapeutic effect over time.

02

Awareness

Precision

Each asana movement in Iyengar yoga is refined and deliberate. You must be highly aware of your actions — incorporating mindfulness through observation and guided instruction. These precise movements support body intelligence and cultivate a meditative state of awareness. The emphasis on precision is not about perfection — it is about understanding the specific purpose and intelligence behind each movement, so that over time your practice becomes self-correcting and deeply intuitive.

03

Flow & Structure

Sequencing

Iyengar yoga believes in intelligent sequencing — asanas performed in a specific order to maximise their cumulative benefits. The sequence is chosen to create balanced flow in your body, supporting physical, emotional, spiritual and mental wellness simultaneously. Unlike free-form yoga, every Iyengar sequence has a therapeutic logic — warming particular muscle groups, preparing specific joints and gradually opening the body in a safe and integrated way before entering deeper postures.

04

Depth & Duration

Timing

Unlike fast-paced or flowing yoga styles, Iyengar yoga focuses on holding each pose for longer durations. This allows you to settle into each posture, explore nuances of alignment and access deeper layers of both muscular engagement and consciousness. Holding activates deeper fascial planes, creates more lasting structural change and generates a genuinely meditative, therapeutic experience that simply isn’t possible when moving quickly from pose to pose.

05

Accessibility

Use of Props

BKS Iyengar’s greatest innovation — and the reason his yoga is accessible to everyone. Belts, chairs, blocks, bolsters and blankets are used to assist correct alignment without physical pain or strain. Props enable you to hold asanas for longer with correct form, making each class more inclusive and genuinely comfortable — particularly for those with stiffness, limited mobility, injuries or chronic conditions. At Adiyogam, we provide a complete set of Iyengar props for every session.

"Iyengar Yoga is not merely a physical practice — it is a journey into self-knowledge. When the body is aligned, the mind becomes clear. When the mind is clear, the soul speaks."

— B.K.S. Iyengar · Light on Yoga · Adiyogam carries this legacy forward

What Makes This Retreat Stand Apart

The Best Iyengar Yoga Retreat in Goa?

In a place like North Goa, where Vinyasa flow and Ashtanga fads abound, this 5-day Iyengar retreat by Adiyogam provides a profoundly different opportunity — a therapeutically intelligent experience designed to help you pause and return to your inner self.

01

Daily Iyengar Yoga Sessions

At the heart of this retreat is pure Iyengar Yoga — using props like bricks, chairs, belts and cushions to make every pose profoundly corrective. Each class feels like a therapy session in motion, identifying your body’s misalignments with clarity. Whether beginner or advanced, sessions are designed to help you evolve with precision and confidence.

02

Real-Time Realignment & Postural Correction

Small-group sessions with hands-on instructions, real-time realignment and individual adjustments. Experienced instructors observe every person’s movement closely, providing personalised guidance. If you have a desk job or sit in wrong postures, this retreat empowers you to understand and correct your unique structural challenges — creating lasting change.

03

Tibetan Sound Healing: Vibration as Medicine

Tibetan Sound Healing is a major pillar of this retreat — using sacred singing bowls to restore your inner balance. Sound penetrates the nerves and fascia to regulate proper energy flow. Not merely relaxing for the mind, sound vibrations work at a cellular level — releasing held tension and deeply harmonising your nervous system after intensive alignment sessions.

04

Ice Plunge: A Reset for Your Nervous System

Guided ice plunge sessions ignite blood circulation, reduce inflammation and awaken mental clarity. Unlike other Goa retreats that offer light yoga while visitors enjoy beach activities, this retreat is for those who seek stillness, sustainable inner healing and genuine silence. The cold immersion builds the nervous system resilience to meet life’s discomforts with calm and equanimity.
